Welcome to the website of the Blessed Gerard Hospital

Our hospital is one of the largest psychiatric institutions in the country, treating the full spectrum of psychiatric disorders. The spirit of our founder and his dedication to his patients is an example for us to follow in our daily work.

Hospital on the edge of town

The Boldog Gellért Hospital is one of the largest psychiatric institutions in the country and the first member of the Hungarian Maltese Charity Service to provide a purely health care service.

Our hospital treats the full spectrum of psychiatric illnesses. We provide addiction treatment, general rehabilitation (mood disorders, anxiety, panic disorders, personality disorders) and also treat dementia in old age.

We also provide outpatient and inpatient care. Two of our key specialties are addiction treatment and advanced dementia care, which is available to out-of-hospital patients from outside the area.

Our hospital is located in Pomáz-Kiskovácsi, far from Budapest, surrounded by forests. This location, close to nature, provides not only a pleasant atmosphere, but also peace and quiet for our patients, contributing to their rehabilitation.

Our specialties

Advanced level dementia unit

Palliative care and a dementia-friendly environment for our elderly patients

One of the most important tasks of our hospital is to provide humane care for patients with dementia. This can reduce the patient’s fear and anxiety as much as possible and increase their well-being. Dementia requires specialised therapy, so we place great emphasis on maintaining our patients’ abilities and socialisation, supported by personalised occupational therapy. In our palliative approach, we do not aim to prolong the patient’s life at any cost, but rather to eliminate the patient’s agonising pain and ensure their emotional and physical well-being during their stay with us.

Addictology department

We are first in the country to offer a family rehabilitation programme for addiction treatment

In our addiction unit, we provide high level rehabilitation care for people who are interested in a 4-6 month group therapy treatment. During this period, we teach them how to live sober. We believe that addiction is not a mental illness, but rather a problem of insecurity in social relationships and low self-esteem. For this reason, we have designed the therapeutic learning process for our clients so that their own families are an active part of it, as together they need to develop a way of life and a community that will help them to maintain the sobriety they have learned after leaving us. It is therefore not only the addict himself who must recover from addiction, but also his family.

About Blessed Gerard

Our hospital was named after the Italian Blessed Gerard, who lived at the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries. As a young man, he came to Jerusalem, where he became the head of an isopotamia founded by Italian merchants near the Church of the Holy Sepulchre to care for and protect Christian pilgrims. He is best known as the founder of the Order of St John of Jerusalem (later the Order of Malta). He was beatified by the Pope in recognition of his work for the sick and the destitute. His spirit and his devotion to the sick are an example for us to follow in our daily work.
